USDA conducts first ever survey of organic farming in the United States.  All known organic producers should receive the survey in the mail, but you can also complete the survey on-line. The survey will include not only current organic producers, but also those in transition.  Deadline is June 17, 2009.  Make your voice count!  Complete the survey.

Countryside Conservancy awarded grant funding from The Center for Farmland Policy Innovation and the Rural Rehab Board to set up a manure bartering system in Baughman Township, Wayne County.

Increased market consolidation in beef industry threatens markets...and food inspection

Was the latest beef recall just a fluke?  Yet another merger is in process furthering the consolidation of the beef industry in the United States.  This will further effect not only prices paid to producers, the type of farming taking place but also may effect food inspection. The latest article by Alan Guebert from the March 20th issue of Farm & Dairy tackles this issue head on.

Report: Farmland Ignored

David W. Jones from the News-Herald reported last week about the release of the first ever repeat Cost of Community Service Study (COCS). Read the article here.

American Farmland Trust's COCS report "Finding a Balance" reinforced previous COCS studies showing that agricultural and open space lands are a strategic resource - not just environmentally and socially but also in helping communities maintain fiscal balance.
